Farewell Europe!

Our final day in Europe began with the much anticipated challenge of squeezing 5 weeks of living back into our suitcases while remaining under the luggage allowance for the plane. After some juggling we managed this super human effort but realised we were going to need to purchase an extra case.

After checking out of the Laimer Hof hotel at 11am, we had quite a few hours to spare until we had to farewell our Beemer at the airport so we decided to drive to the highest mountain in the German alps, Zugspitze. With our faithful GPS directing we had sight of snow covered mountains in less than an hour. The villages and scenery were beyond anything ewe had anticipated. The  movies, photos and postcards just don't do justice to this spectacular part of the world.

After a few nervous moments on the snow and ice, we finally found a car park at the cable car that takes you to the top of the mountain but the weather and time meant we couldn't do justice to a trip right to the top. Instead we threw snow at each other and then headed inside a little restaurant and enjoyed the amazing views while we feasted on a good winter meal before heading back toward summer!

We were all so glad we made the effort to get down to the alps even if just for a couple of hours. All of us agreed it was a place we needed to come back to in the future, and it was lovely to be leaving Europe with a sense of regret that we couldn't be there longer - much better to leave wanting more than being glad to get out of a place!

I took this photo 3 times - and in each version one of the girls has their eyes closed!

The trip to the airport was a piece of cake despite the centre of Munich being a mess with roadworks. We even managed to find the hire car drop off without too much trouble but unfortunately missed the opportunity to fill the tank beforehand! I guess I'll have to wait and see how much that one will cost!!

Online check in meant that we jumped the queue of hundreds and had our bags off our hands so we could put our feet up and reminisce about the last five weeks of incredible experiences and memories that we have shared, and only wonder at what adventures the next 3 weeks in Africa had in store for us.
